Surgical Steel

Surgical steel (316L) is made of a ferrous alloy, which has a relative small amount of nickel.

Due to the bond of the nickel to the other metals, nickel-salts only gets into the body by a sore or recent stitched piercing. For that reason surgical steel only may used for second application.

For initial application surgical steel isn´t suitable, because otherwise it gets to skin irritation, which can results in the inflammation of the canaliculus and the outgrowing of the jewellery.

Piercings made of surgical steel becomes relative cold and heavy, why often other materials are favoured.

Frequently surgical steel is used in the medical area (osseous fixation screws, osseous plates, wires, staples).
